L’EAU AND BEHOLD Yuan Spa at Hyatt on the Bund saturates the senses
Shanghai China, July 2010…Hyatt on the Bund a vibrant new hotel on the northern end of the Bund in Shanghai celebrated the arrival of Yuan Spa in August 2007.
Spread over 3,000 square metres (32,000 square feet) of the lower lobby, Yuan Spa is dedicated to all aspects of health and wellbeing, encompassing a 25-metre swimming pool; a fully equipped fitness centre; a hair salon; and a juice bar. The spa facilities include 12 treatment rooms, four of which feature their own shared relaxation area, making them ideal for private groups; spacious changing areas lead to whirlpools and cold plunge pools and steam, sauna and relaxation rooms.
Inspiration for Yuan Spa derived from the flow and natural beauty of a river (yuan translates as ‘source of water’ in Chinese), coupled with the simple serenity of ancient Chinese bathing rituals. There is, quite literally, ‘water, water everywhere’ to saturate the senses. As the visitor descends a spiral staircase into the tranquil lower lobby, a boulder-lined river spanning the length of the vast atrium will hint at the aqueous experience that awaits. A number of the treatment rooms have been designed so guests are able to imagine they’re being pampered by an idyllic riverbank. Twin glass walls, with a stone-filled ‘river’ running between the panes, allow guests to look and listen to the soothing sound of water washing over rocks.

Yuan Spa at Hyatt on the Bund saturates the senses
Conceived by the award-winning US-based design company Remedios Siembieda Inc, creator of some of the world’s most luxurious hotels including the Grand Hyatt Tokyo and
Park Hyatt Beijing, the interior of Yuan Spa mixes modern, clean lines with an authentic Chinese aesthetic. Light wood and stone in calming natural shades will be complimented with darker, Oriental antique reproductions such as elm footbaths and Chinese ceramics.
Combining traditional Chinese wellness and beauty philosophies with European aromatherapy and skincare treatments, Yuan Spa utilises natural and local ingredients well recognised for enhancing natural beauty, wellbeing and longevity. The spa experience will commence with a welcome foot ritual – a Chinese ‘foot soak’ harnessing the cleansing and antioxidant benefits of oolong tea, followed by a calming foot massage with a traditional jade massage roller.
The Yuan Spa menu focuses around three core themes: ‘Serenity’, promoting calm and relaxation; ‘Vitality’, to rejuvenate and renew energy; and ‘Stability’, incorporating Chinese therapies to restore balance and wellness. There is an emphasis on ‘hydro therapies’ with signature oriental Bath Rituals and Vichy Massage using pressure point shower jets. Other menu highlights include the Yuan Chinese meridian massage using jade stones and the Yuan body scrub incorporating lingzhi and shitake.
Exclusive to the Yuan Spa in Shanghai is Kerstin Florian facial and body products: a progressive European beauty range based on natural resources such as thermal mineral water, mud, algae, herbal extracts and essentials oils. The spa also uses the innovative SkinCeuticals dermatology brand from the US and Ba Yan Ka La: the first body, hair and skincare line based on millennia-old Chinese herbal traditions, formulated using water from the Yellow River high on the Tibetan Plateau.
Adjacent to the spa, a Fitness Centre features equipment by the US brand Star Trac, including cross trainers, steppers and exclusive spinning bikes. Machines come equipped with built-in user-controlled fans and personal screens showing satellite TV. iPods loaded with various play-lists are also available to help motivate guests during their workout.
