THE FARMER’S MARKET ON THE TERRACE Announces Its Return on Friday 18 November 2011 09.00 – 15.00
The arrival of autumn in Dubai and the new growing season heralds the return of THE FARMER’’S MARKET ON THE TERRACE for its third season at Souk al Bahar.

Baker & Spice anticipate that the weekly market will resume straight after the Eid Al Adha holiday, with the first date being Friday 18 November, from 09.00 until 15.00. It is expected to run every Friday until mid-April next year.
Commenting on the market’s return, Yael Mejia of Baker & Spice said, “This is the third season for THE FARMER’’S MARKET ON THE TERRACE, and thanks to the support of our many patrons and shoppers, it is set to be even bigger and better than before.” Yael continued, “Not only do we expect to have even more farmers taking part, but they have also been encouraged to plant an even greater variety of crops. We are all eagerly waiting to discover what the new season will bring: the chickens are laying eggs again and the first batch of real, local organic eggs arrived in our Dukkan Al Manzil shop this week. Numbers are limited but the hens have been instructed to up production!”
In the market’s first weeks, visitors can expect to find an abundance of locally grown tomatoes, cucumbers, capsicum, chilis, rocket, lettuce and herbs. They will rediscover the joy of buying freshly picked produce that has not been subjected to lengthy travels in chillers. They buy directly from the farmers at reasonable prices without any middlemen or transportation costs.
Yael Mejia added, “There is no doubt that the sheer audacity of launching the first true Farmer’s Market in Dubai three years ago had the effect of lending a match to a touch paper. Given the opportunity, it is clear that customers prefer real food in real time, with as little intervention as possible. The integrity of the farmers paid dividends every Friday reaping the joy of customers young and old. We are very happy to be entering our third season and firmly believe that the market will once again become a firm Friday favourite”.
Until the market resumes, visit Baker & Spice outlets in Souk al Bahar or Dukkan Al Manzil for a foretaste of what flavours are in the offing.

The Farmer’s market could not have come into being without the help of Emaar Malls Group who recognised from the outset the benefits of such a market: for consumers who want to buy local, the farmers who are able to sell direct to shoppers, and generally raise awareness of the quality of home grown produce.
About Baker & Spice
Whilst Baker & Spice’s philosophy draws on its UK heritage, the Dubai operation is independent from the UK and is ploughing its own food furrow. The kitchens are run like a home kitchen, inspired by what fresh produce is to hand. We look to the local region for this produce and for ideas in creating the food that we serve. We are passionate about taste.
Our menus reflect what is in season locally and within the region, and in peak condition. Sourcing food this way means that we are minimising our food miles and carbon footprint so the journey from field to plate is significantly shorter. Chickens come from Al Ain, fish and shellfish from Oman, fruit and vegetables from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah. The produce is picked for us early in the morning and is in our kitchens by 9am.
In the main kitchen in Dukkan Al Manzil we make our own jams, curds, chutneys and pickles. We bake fresh bread on the premises daily: the finest natural and wholesome chemical-free ingredients are used according to traditional artisan methods and recipes – the main ingredients being flour, salt, water and yeast. The bread is left to rise naturally over 24 - 48 hours, creating a pillow of dough which is as light as a puffy cloud. Try our sourdough breads, wholemeal loaves spelt wheat or pain de mie to name but a few.
