$10,000 raised during Aloft’s Abu Dhabi’s third charity run for UNICEF
450 participants race through ADNEC’s halls in support of “Road to Awareness” drive
Abu Dhabi – 30th September 2012 – More than 450 enthusiastic participants ranging in age from 2 to 62 raised $10,000 at the third annual “Aloft Runs for Children” charity run organized by Aloft Abu Dhabi inside Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. This year’s target of was very ambitious said Stephan Vanden Auweele General Manager of Aloft Abu Dhabi. “We wanted to set a very high target so we could really push ourselves to achieve this; we are extremely pleased with what was accomplished today,” he said, thanking all participants and event partners.
The event was held in support of Starwood’s global fundraising campaign, “Road to Awareness 2012” which aims to raise at least $300,000 to support UNICEF in the construction of pre-schools and help 50,000 children under the age of 6 to get ready for primary education in Ethiopia. Since its launch in 2008, Starwood’s Road to Awareness associates fundraising campaign has raised over $1.5 million to support different UNICEF education projects in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Last year alone, through various sponsors, suppliers and activities taking place at our properties, our EAME associates raised an incredible $600,000 to support education in Pakistan and Romania.
The $300,000 raised by Starwood EAME associates in 2012, aims to support UNICEF with the following;
•Construction and quipment for pre-school classrooms attached to primary schools.
•Training of at least 10,000 Child-to-Child facilitators.
•Produce and distribute vital schoolbooks for 50,000 children age 6 and under.
•Train at least 200 education experts and parents on child development.
Taking place 8:00 am – 6pm on Saturday September 22nd, the run and was open to teams and individuals competing for different prizes. Besides the fantastic prizes all runners were entered in a grand prize raffle; to win one of the many prizes including trips, weekend breaks & stays in one of the many Starwood hotels around the world, dinners, health club memberships and many more.
