- Enjoyment is the top priority
While the CEO or the money man may be completely focused on driving revenue and balance sheet results, any event whether it be a team building, corporate retreat or incentive needs to keep an element of fun in mind. People respond better when they are in a state of ease and enjoyment, rather than stress and tension. Ask yourself why you need to take them out of the work environment and you will usually find it is to avoid distraction and to foster fresh perspectives.
2. Free time
Especially relevant, for resort stays, the Anantara team recommends including some free time. Itineraries designed without a moment to breathe are rarely ‘brag-worthy’. You want the participants to enjoy themselves, to post about their adventures and their experiences, and perhaps even use your social media hashtags. Ensure there are some activities to pepper the meeting schedule. Create an environment that bonds people together through shared experiences. 4. Clear Goals
Have your main objective for the gathering clearly defined and shared with your team. Have secondary objectives if needed. Make sure everyone realizes that whilst we are having fun, there are expected outcomes and there will be follow up on return to the office. Most of all follow through to conclusion, so you have measurable outcomes. In some cases it might just be a reward event where the main objective is to have fun. In another, it may be to brainstorm a new product launch and your goals may be much more specific.
5. Memorable touches
Treat your people like you do your best customers. Talk to the hotel or your event planner, about the special touches. Inexpensive gifts sometimes have the most impact, like a group photo delivered to their room as a surprise or a soft toy as a turndown gift when it’s time for lights out. The secret to great gifts is to ask yourself, would I like to receive this? Would it wow me? If it doesn’t, then don’t do it. You’ll find you are falling into the trap of doing something for the sake of it. If you’d throw it in the bin, then guess what? So will they.
