Bahrain City Centre ‘Kicks up its heels’ with a 3km Walkathon in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Calls on the community to walk for hope on October 15 in support of local charity, Think Pink Bahrain for breast cancer awareness
Manama, Bahrain, 12 September 2011 – Bahrain City Centre will be ‘thinking pink’ this October, with the ‘Kick up your heels’ Walkathon on October 15, a 3km walk of hope in celebration of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. An annual and globally celebrated campaign, this year Bahrain City Centre is supporting Think Pink Bahrain, a local non-profit dedicated to increasing community awareness of, and raising funds for breast cancer in the Kingdom.
Conveniently taking place within the mall’s expansive grounds, the Walkathon starts at 8:00am at the Food Court, Level 2 with an enthusiastic team of Fitness First instructors leading the pace for walkers on a course traversing all levels of the mall, towards the final 3km finish line. The Walkathon is non-competitive and aims to create solidarity amongst the local community as they march for a cause.
The Walkathon is limited to 300 participants and open to both males and females, residents and visitors in Bahrain on a first come, first served basis. Registration starts today, Monday September 12 and costs 5BD per walker, which includes a commemorative ‘Kick up your heels’ Walkathon pink T-shirt and a reusable matching Think Pink Bahrain tote bag. With the Walkathon expected to attract widespread community-interest, Bahrain City Centre’s ‘Kick up your heels’ Walkathon is encouraging early registration, which can be done at the main Customer Service Desk on the Ground Floor.
Non-walkers, family and friends can still lend their support of Think Pink Bahrain and breast cancer awareness by ‘sponsoring’ a walker by way of a cash donation. All proceeds raised including registration, will go to supporting the Mohammed Fakhro & Bros MRI Fund toward the purchase of a new digital MRI machine, a key instrument used in the early detection of breast cancer. As an added incentive and congratulatory prize, the walker who raises the most funds through friend and family donations, will be given a night’s stay for two, at the newly opened
5-star Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel Bahrain City Centre including dinner at their signature restaurant, Saveur.
“Bahrain City Centre has become such an integrated part of the Bahrain community, we believe in large part due to our strong commitment to community awareness and outreach activities,” said Ray Scott, Asset Director for Bahrain City Centre. “All of us are enthusiastically tying up our laces for the ‘Kick up your heels’ Walkathon, and we encourage everyone to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by walking, making a donation, wearing a Pink Ribbon and helping us maintain the strong community spirit at Bahrain City Centre.”
“The team at Think Pink Bahrain would like to thank Bahrain City Centre for the opportunity to spread our awareness campaign to a new platform,” said Julie Sprakel, Founder of Think Pink Bahrain. “Breast cancer is not race, religion or class orientated. It is only with research, education, early intervention and public awareness that we can fight this disease. We hope to encourage more patrons to the centre to be aware about the importance of breast self-examinations, not just through the month of October.”
For the month of October, Bahrain City Centre will also be making Pink Ribbons available at all Customer Service Counters. For a small donation, visitors can wear the Pink Ribbon - the internationally recognised symbol for breast cancer awareness and spread the spirit of community for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
