BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR PLANET IS THE GOAL AS SHERATON IMPERIAL KUALA LUMPUR HOTEL & THE WESTIN LANGKAWI RESORT & SPA GO DARK FOR EARTH HOUR 2012
For The Fourth Year, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Around the Globe Join Together to Mark Environmental Awareness Event
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 26, 2012 – By spending an hour in the dark this Saturday, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel and The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa will join millions around the world to send a powerful message about a brighter future for the planet.
Both hotels will turn off their lights in observance of Earth Hour, the global environmental awareness event created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Last year, Earth Hour 2011 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 135 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.
To underscore parent Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.’s (NYSE: HOT) dedication to environmental sustainability, the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel and The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa will also share other energy-saving measures during Earth Hour, March 31 at 8:30 p.m. local time. Among them: Turning off exterior signage lighting; dimming or turning off non-essential interior lighting; using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars; and using in-room voicemail messages and in-room television messages to inform guests about Earth Hour observances.
“It is evident that sustainability plays a major role in today’s world. Earth Hour is a step towards preserving Mother Earth and we all should play our part, no matter big or small,” said Kurt Vieren, Hotel Manager, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel.
Over in Kuala Lumpur, in addition to switching off non-essential lights, the Sheraton Imperial KL will also be spreading awareness on preserving Earth through the Hotel’s digital signage in the lobby. This Saturday, guests are in for an environmental treat as the hotel F&B teams will serve specially-concocted Earth Hour Grapefruit Mojitos and a variety of canapés at the poolside located on level 5. On hand to put guests in a relaxing mood, the hotel’s in-house band will be providing live entertainment as well.
Additionally, in support of Earth Hour, the award-winning Essence restaurant will serve some scrumptious dishes, charcoal-cooked (omitting the use of gas), at its dinner buffet spread. To book your dinner at Essence, please contact us 03-27179900 extn. 6933 or e-mail the restaurant at firstname.lastname@example.org. Meanwhile on the mystical island of Langkawi, The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa will be offering diners at its Tide restaurant complimentary cocktails or mocktails to encourage diners to support Earth Hour. Named ‘Emerged from Earth’, the specially-concocted Earth Hour cocktail is made from Earl Grey tea, Grain vodka and sparkling wine – all key ingredients which ‘emerge’ from the earth – tea from a plant, vodka from a grain and wine from grapes. It will truly be a candlelight affair at the restaurant as all non essential lights will be switched off.
In addition to this, the resort’s associates housing compound will also go dark. Tiki torches will be used instead to light the pathways. “Education plays a major role in encouraging sustainability. Staging activities around Earth Hour is a great and fun way to engage our customers but spreading the message remains our main aim. I am really happy to see that our associates are also keen to be a part of saving Mother Earth”, said Helmut Pluecker, General Manager of The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa.
Come and support Earth Hour at the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel or at The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa, on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 8.30pm.
This year will mark Starwood’s third annual participation in Earth Hour, making it one of the biggest worldwide companies to make a global statement with a voluntary hour of darkness.
