Culinary Team Honored with Industry-first Dinner
Celebrity Cruises is seeking chefs to join award-winning program
In a salute to Celebrity Cruises’ culinary leadership, the esteemed James Beard House in New York City recently honored our corporate chef team with an invitation to demonstrate their artistry at the historic venue.
“Celebrity Cruises is known for outstanding food and beverage service,” said Celebrity’s director of culinary operations, John Suley, who headlined the event. “To be the first cruise line ever to cook at the Beard House is a remarkable honor for our brand. It’s huge.”
The James Beard House is known worldwide for its guest chef-led dinners, which aim to educate, inspire, entertain and foster an appreciation of cuisine. Once the home of American culinary pioneer James Beard, this institution is today regarded as a culinary performance space.
Just as they do every day onboard our ships, the team dazzled guests with a tantalizing culinary experience. “We had tremendously positive comments,” Suley said. “Guests were stopping us to say, ‘Is this really the level of cuisine you serve on your ships? I would never have considered a cruise, but now I will think about Celebrity. The menu, wines, and service were all superb.’” He added, “because of the level of skill and passion of the type of people we hire to work in our kitchens onboard, we were confident in saying, ‘yes, this is absolutely what you will find onboard.”
Preparing for the James Beard House event was a month-long process that included creating the menu, sourcing ingredients, carefully orchestrating a prep plan and partnering with Celebrity’s public relations team to maximize exposure. Reflective of the global influences on our onboard menus and the international mix of chefs onboard, the team of chefs who presented at the Beard House represents six countries from five continents. Suley is from the U.S., and his team members hail from all over the world:
· Thierry Houlbert, Executive Pastry Chef – France
· Rufino Rengifo, Corporate Executive Chef – Venezuela
· Ronald Sioson, Traveling Pastry Chef – Philippines
· W. Thomas Szymanski, Senior Traveling Executive Chef – Poland
· Steve Van Der Merwe, Corporate Executive Chef – South Africa
Our team makes all the difference. "When we consider potential team members we not only look at culinary skills, we also look for individuals with energetic personalities and an eye for detail, a competitive spirit and a desire to continuously learn and grow – this is essential to our recipe for success,” added Suley. “And because we hire chefs with high energy and an outgoing personality, Celebrity is changing the way people look at dining on cruise ships. We hope that our passion for cooking amazing food adds an element of the unexpected, of adventure, even of astonishment, to our modern luxury vacations.”
