Abu Dhabi, UAE, 28 May 2016: Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE's national rail network, announced today that it has been recognised by the Middle East Economic Digest’s (MEED’s) 2016 Quality Awards for Projects; receiving the GCC Rail Project of the Year for Stage 1 of the project.
The MEED Quality Awards for Projects, whose rigorous judging criteria factors in project socio-economic and environmental impact, coupled with design, engineering and significant construction milestones, recognizes companies for their pioneering excellence in project execution across the region. Projects from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were shortlisted for the awards, with a total of 50 attaining the highest honours across multiple categories, for being the highest quality projects in the Middle East.
“Etihad Rail is honoured to receive the GCC Rail Project of the Year Award for 2016, in an awards programme that recognises some of the region’s and the world’s greatest success stories in construction and industrial performance,” said Eng. Faris Saif Al Mazrouei, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Rail.
“Since beginning construction, Etihad Rail remains committed to ensuring the highest design and construction standards as part of an iconic project that will revolutionise the UAE’s logistics and transportation infrastructure. Recognition of our efforts is an appreciated gesture, as we continue to forge ahead with our goal of connecting the nation’s passengers and commercial centres with neighbouring GCC counterparts, thereby contributing to the UAE’s socio-economic future,” he added.
The award winners were announced at a distinguished ceremony which marked the end of the 2016 MEED Construction Leadership Summit, an executive-level event held in Dubai, which brought together delegates in the Gulf’s construction industry.
The award-winning Etihad Rail project is being delivered in three key stages of development, with the 1,200 kilometre long rail network forming part of the vital GCC Railway Network that links the UAE to Saudi Arabia through Ghweifat in the West and Oman through Al Ain in the East.
About Etihad Rail (www.etihadrail.ae)
Etihad Rail was established in June 2009 under Federal Law no. 2, with a mandate to manage the development, construction and operation of the UAE’s national freight and passenger railway network. Being built in three stages, the railway network will link the principal centres of population and industry of the UAE, and will form a vital part of the planned GCC railway network across the six countries of the GCC.
In December 2015, the Federal Transport Authority – Land and Maritime (FTA) granted approval for commercial operations on Stage One, which has carried more than 5.8 million tonnes of granulated sulphur as of April 2016. The 264-km Stage One stretches from the gas fields of Shah and Habshan to the sulphur export point of Ruwais via the Mirfa depot. Stage Two will connect the railway to Musaffah, Khalifa Port and Jebel Ali port and will see the railway extend to the Saudi and Omani borders.
In addition to the Operational & Maintenance Agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) for the transport of sulphur between Habshan and Shah to Ruwais, Etihad Rail is also in advanced commercial and technical negotiations with other prospective partners, including DP World, ESI, Arkan, and others.
To date, Etihad Rail has signed more than 50 Memoranda of Understanding with a number of customers throughout the Emirates – in industries ranging from petrochemicals and agriculture to aggregates and waste – all of whom recognise rail as the preferred mode of transport for their goods.
Built to international standards, Etihad Rail’s state-of-the-art network will span approximately 1,200 km, acting as a catalyst for economic growth and sustained social development. Upon completion, the railway will redefine logistics and transport in the region, providing a modern, safe, efficient and sustainable mode of transport that will connect all regions of the UAE to its neighbouring GCC countries.
