Fitness First Sponsors Gulf for Good’s ‘Cycle the Seven Emirates’ Challenge
Community Event to Mark UAE’s 40th Anniversary and Support Charity School in Ajman
Dubai-UAE: 14 June, 2011 – Fitness First, the world’s leading health and fitness club chain and a member of the Landmark Group, today announced it is sponsoring the ‘Cycle the Seven Emirates’ event organised by Dubai-based charity Gulf for Good to raise money for Al Manar Charity School in Ajman.
Starting from Al Ain, all seven of the UAE emirates will be explored on this 400km expedition that will raise money for the Al Manar Charity School in Ajman. Challengers from all over the GCC will explore the mountains and wadis of the emirates and their exclaves, cycle along the stunning Indian Ocean coast, navigate their way through the desert before a triumphant ride into Dubai, marking the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the UAE.
George Flooks, COO, Fitness First, said: “Fitness First has embraced the opportunity to sponsor this event in line with its mission of ‘making the world a fitter place’ and its responsibility to societal development.
“While the event will help participants become involved in fitness activities, it is also supporting education of the less fortunate. Education opens doors and empowers anyone to shape a better future for individuals, families and eventually the community. We are extremely glad to be a part of this initiative.”
Brian Wilkie, Chairman of Gulf for Good, said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Fitness First in staging this unique challenge. The funds raised will go to an extremely deserving children’s charity in the UAE and the event will culminate on the UAE’s 40th National Day, which makes us expect that the limited number of places for participating in the event will fill very soon.
“We will be camping in the desert and staying in Barasti huts, finding new routes through the spectacular Hajar Mountains and seeing the UAE from a completely new perspective. So, if you have ever thought of doing something adventurous that will also help others in the UAE, then Gulf for Good wants to hear from you!”
Fitness First will play an active role in training the participants for the event. Cycling and RPM training will be held on a continual basis to prepare the participants for the event. In addition, a circuit and core strength training will be held on 24 June, at the DIFC club with various on-going training events right through the summer months and on up to the date of the challenge.
‘Information Evenings’ will be held in Dubai on 22 June and in Abu Dhabi on 25 July to disseminate the necessary details for participation.
Gulf for Good will charge a registration fee of AED2,200 from participants who will also be required to raise a minimum of AED12,000 in sponsorship money to cover the costs (accommodation, food) of the challenge.
Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group, Gulf for Good organizes exciting adventure challenges around the world. Participation is open to all, provided they can raise the fixed sponsorship amount, have the level of fitness needed and are over 18 years of age.
To date, 33 Gulf for Good challenges, with over 720 participants from 41 countries, including many GCC nationals, have raised more than US$1.7 million for schools, hospitals, orphanages, and medical equipment in 23 countries across the Middle East, South America, Asia and Africa.
With more than 12 clubs across the UAE offering state-of-the-art equipment, fully qualified personal trainers and the latest group exercise classes, Fitness First is dedicated to ‘making the world a fitter place’.
