Malaysia now on Coffee Planet
Dubai-based Coffee Planet debuts its café franchise model in Asia, its first international retail opening heralds start of strategic rollout plan targeting gourmet coffee lovers in key gateway cities
Dubai-based Coffee Planet, the Middle East’s leading coffee company has taken its unique retail concepts to Asia with the launch of its first café in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Covering an area of 1,500 square feet, the 76-seat Coffee Planet café is located in Shah Alam, the modern upmarket state capital of Selangor province, near the capital Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the heart of a thriving community, the café is set to become a focal point on the local social scene with a university, extensive commercial facilities and large residential population close by.
“We saw Malaysia as a natural fit as the location for our first café outside of the GCC due to its trend-setting reputation within the region and gateway destination into Asia. We felt that the youthfulness and modern design elements of the brand would also match the market demographic and give us a foothold in the region with ample opportunity for future growth; and we have already had enquiries from Japan and South Korea,” said Richard Jones, Managing Director, Coffee Planet.
“One of our primary objectives in launching Coffee Planet was to create an exportable brand. There is an absence of homegrown brands translating well out of the UAE where the culture of importing big overseas franchise brands has impeded originality. We really wanted to break that trend and create something with strong regional roots, but with equally relevant international appeal,” added Jones.
The new outlet brings the company’s growing portfolio to six stores, four in the UAE including the flagship café in Sharjah City Centre mall and a recently opened outlet in Muscat, Oman. Coffee Planet plans three further store openings in Malaysia in 2012, as well as a further ten cafés and kiosks in operation in the UAE by the end of next year.
Coffee Planet rose to prominence through its hugely successful ‘on the go’ express coffee machines located in over 150 ADNOC and ENOC/EPPCO petrol stations throughout the UAE.
“Our business model has developed from a simple self service convenience store product back in 2005, into a sophisticated brand with global franchise potential. The launch of our first international outlet is the start of a planned rollout into key strategic locations from the UAE to Asia and Russia,” said Jones.
Coffee Planet operates its own state-of-the-art roastery facility in Dubai, which gives the brand an added point of differentiation and control over its supply chain. The company sources its 100% Arabica green beans directly from farms across the globe, before hand blending and roasting them locally to ensure the highest quality and freshest coffee.
The design of the Shah Alam outlet replicates the company’s UAE venues down to the café’s trademark IT hub, but also incorporates a number of local design elements that reflect different aspects of Malaysian culture.
“Each Coffee Planet café will have the same signature buzz, the same great coffee, but we also want our franchise partners to bring in an element of their own individuality, creating unique venues under the brand umbrella, not just generic copies of the original,” remarked Jones.
Indeed the opening had a touch of contemporary Malaysian culture and glamour with singing star Yuna performing several songs from her new album to an audience of 150 specially invited guests.

Meet Coffee Planet:
Coffee Planet is a real-life example of what can be achieved with a little bit of discontent with the way things are, proving that there is always a better way of doing, saying or supplying something.
Life began in Dubai in 2005. Our passion for coffee has led us to deliver the highest quality and freshest coffee to consumers in many convenient locations. But we didn’t start by building coffee shops like everyone else.
We provide a number of awesome coffee solutions to ensure drinkers can get their coffee hot, fresh and tasty wherever they are, be it in the office, on the road, in the mall or in a hotel.
How do we do it? This is achieved firstly by having our own Roastery in the UAE where we roast only the highest quality 100% Arabica beans (they’re the best ones!), which means that our customers are often drinking their Coffee Planet coffee within four weeks of it being roasted. This has a massive improved effect on the flavour and aroma of the coffee - as between 2-6 weeks after roasting is the optimum time to drink roasted coffee (not a lot of people know that!).
Secondly our state-of-the-art automated coffee equipment provides absolute perfection in every cup at our convenience locations ensuring a consistent coffee every time. In our cafés we use the best semi-automatic machines and our baristas are personally trained by our champion Roastmaster, Rosco.
So we bring best people, together with the best quality coffee beans and the most sophisticated coffee machines resulting in the fastest and freshest quality coffee available in the UAE. Simple, right?
In 2010 alone, over 4 million cups of Coffee were served from Coffee Planet outlets, whether it was from Coffee Planet retail stores, hotels, restaurants or offices supplied by Coffee Planet throughout the UAE, doubling year on year sales since the end of 2008.
