Media One Hotel to ‘Go Beyond the Hour' after Earth Hour 2011
Media One Hotel to ‘Go Beyond the Hour' after Earth Hour 2011
This year Media One Hotel will participate again for Earth Hour on March 26th and will ‘go beyond the hour’ to ensure our team of enthusiasts remain focussed on saving the earth’s resources for the future.
Earth Hour is a global movement that in 2010 saw hundreds of millions of people from community, business and government, all over the world joining together and switching off the lights for an hour in a show of support for environmental action. Earth Hour 2011 asks people and organizations to use the hour as a time to make a renewed commitment to take action for the planet beyond the hour.
At 8.30pm on Saturday March 26th Media One Hotel will commit to Earth Hour by switching off our external Jumbotron, external lights, information screens in the hotel and any unnecessary lights and use candles to illuminate our public areas. We will also be working with our guests to reduce consumption in their rooms by inviting them to join a ‘Green’ cocktail reception, where they will receive free drinks when they show their room key. Our in-room control units are activated by the room key to commence the use of air conditioning, lighting, TV’s and anything electrical such as computers, iPod docking system, tea & coffee making facilities so if the guests join us for Earth Hour we are saving energy throughout the hotel and everyone is involved to reduce consumption.
We are also making a commitment to ‘Go Beyond the Hour’ by producing a short fact sheet for all the employees to reinforce our energy efficiency and eco friendly measures already implemented at the hotel and to encourage our enthusiasts to continue with these energy saving practises in their accommodation and day to day activities.
Media One Hotel has registered for the online platform, Beyond the Hour, that has been launched this year to inspire and showcase positive actions the global community are taking for the planet beyond Earth Hour to commit to an ongoing environmental action and share it with the globe to motivate others to do the same. We have also uploaded a series of motivational videos on our Jumbotron to show the countdown to Earth Hour.
During the past twelve months Media One has continued to implement environmental practises throughout the hotel:
Ø Regular light bulbs have been replaced with low energy light bulbs in all areas reducing our consumption from 3801Kwh to 760kwh per month!
Ø A motion sensor system has been introduced for all the lighting in the public areas, corridors, as well as back of house to switch off unnecessary lights.
Ø A dimmer system is in place that has a centralised programme for mood lighting throughout all the front of house areas.
Ø A heat exchanger has been installed in the swimming pool which ensures the water is chilled or heated dependant on the exterior temperatures.
Ø The room control units also monitor the temperature of the air-conditioning in the rooms, allowing only a 6degree bracket for change [either + or – 3 degrees only].
Ø All the elevators in the hotel use regenerative power to save electricity as this involves the hoist motor functioning as a generator to generate electricity. The electricity is returned to the building’s electrical system and is used by the electrical equipment in the building; therefore the building is consuming the power generated by the elevators.
Ø Water savers have been implemented into all guest rooms and public areas and this has resulted in reducing the amount of water used per flush from 9litres to 6litres.
Ø We introduced biodegradable amenities to the guest rooms. The packaging has been made with Eco Pure®: Eco Pure® breaks down the molecular structure of common plastics to support a safe process of biodegradation. We also use biodegradable products to fill the bottles.
Ø Media One has also introduced eco friendly chemicals for cleaning in the hotel. It is an enzyme based product for cleaning of carpets, upholstery and multipurpose uses in public areas, which means we do not increase our carbon foot print with products that may not be necessary.
Cora Stuart General Manager stated, “Media One had a successful Earth Hour last year and we have continued to implement energy efficient and eco friendly measures throughout the hotel during the year. In 2011 we remain steadfast in our commitment to environmental sustainability and this is reflected in the hotels continued participation in Earth Hour. We are extending this to our enthusiast’s accommodation this year to implement practises ‘beyond the hour’. We are also pleased to hear the aim of Earth Hour is to go ‘beyond the hour’ as ‘Go Beyond’ is the mission statement for the team at Media One Hotel”.
‘Beyond the Hour’ at Media One during 2011, aims to implement paperless Wednesday’s where we do not use printers in the hotel; along with a ‘switch off & save’ campaign for all to assist in reducing our energy consumption and costs. We are also investigating a recycling programme to reduce our garbage removal and make us more environmentally friendly.
Earth Hour began in one city, in one country on Saturday 31 March 2007, when 2.2 million individuals in Sydney, Australia turned off their lights for one hour to stand up for action on climate change. Last year, hundreds of millions of people in 128 countries and territories and over 4,600 cities across the world participated in Earth Hour and many have chosen to ‘go beyond the hour’.
Anyone can visit www.earthhour.org/beyondthehour to view others' actions, add an action for the planet, and celebrate it with the world by turning off the lights for Earth Hour 2011 at 8:30pm Saturday, 26 March and join Media One in their ongoing positive actions for the planet.
