ONYX HOSPITALITY GROUP anticipates growth in the Middle East
Thailand-based ONYX Hospitality Group is celebrating an exciting period of development for its most established hotel brand, Amari, as well as its entry into the Vietnamese market with its OZO brand. In the Middle East, ONYX is focused on driving development of its select service brand OZO and boutique serviced apartments, Shama.
Amari is well known within the Middle East market, with Amari Doha performing extremely well in Qatar since its opening in January 2013. Amari Residences Bangkok continues to retain its popularity with visitors from the Middle East to Thailand and the new Ocean Wing at Amari Phuket is proving popular with honeymooners and families from the region with its spacious one and two bedroom suites in one of Phuket’s prime locations.
ONYX’s OZO brand is also going through a period of accelerated development. May 2015 saw the fifth property in the portfolio open, as OZO Kandy Sri Lanka welcomed its first guests. The property occupies a prime location in the heart of town, adjacent to Kandy Lake. OZO is a select service hotel experience, created for travellers who crave the basics done right – a great night’s sleep, energising breakfasts and reliable connectivity to the world and the local area. Appealing particularly to the Saudi market during the long summer months, OZO Kandy Sri Lanka has gained a firm foothold in the Middle East outbound market in the short time since it opened, and ONYX is looking to expand the brand throughout the region. With a trend towards well maintained, select service, affordable hotels in the region, OZO is the perfect match for owners and investors looking to expand into this growing market.
Sharing his experience and predictions at the recent “Serviced Apartment Summit” held in Dubai during October 2015, Peter Henley, President & CEO of ONYX Hospitality Group commented,
“The appeal of serviced apartments has grown considerably in recent years, but is still an under- represented segment amongst international hospitality providers. ONYX has been successfully operating the upscale boutique serviced apartments, Shama, in Asia since 2010, and is now looking forward to the opportunity of expanding the Shama brand into the Middle East.”
A leading provider of boutique serviced apartments in the Hong Kong real estate market, Shama entered mainland China in 2007 and introduced the Shama Lite concept of value-orientated serviced apartments in 2013. Often located in prime commercial and residential areas, Shama Lite is designed to appeal to discerning business travellers and families looking for an affordable stylish home away from home. This business model ideally suits the current UAE trend of affordable hotel construction, along with the regional demand for serviced apartment living. The GCC is predicted to be the largest source market for serviced apartments within the region, currently with few international hotel chains penetrating this area for growth.
Henley continued, “Guests like to know they are staying with a recognised accommodation provider, offering consistently well maintained international standards of service and comfort. ONYX is able to offer just such assurances, having successfully managed properties in the serviced apartment and select service categories for many years across the region.”
Further demonstrating commitment to the ever growing Middle East travel market, ONYX recently participated in the first World Halal Travel Show in Abu Dhabi, alongside the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Commenting on the show, Deborah Pascoe, Senior VP Sales & Marketing said,
“ONYX offers a number of hotel brands appealing to the traveller looking for Halal compliant accommodations, including Shama, OZO and Amari. With a strong Muslim population in Southern Thailand, our hotels are also very aware of the needs and desires of the Muslim traveller. This makes ONYX properties the ideal choice for Middle Eastern travellers, and for further expansion in the region. As an international operator with 14 different nationalities working in the corporate office in Bangkok, and over 50 years of industry experience in various markets, ONYX both understands, and is able to seamlessly provide for the needs of all travellers.”
ONYX currently has a portfolio of 59 properties, including 20 properties in development, ensuring its strategic plan to manage 81 hotels, resorts and serviced apartments by 2018 is on track to being achieved.
As ONYX strives towards its goal of becoming Asia’s leading hospitality provider by 2018, a number of exciting signings and openings across the portfolio are planned for next year and beyond.
