Dr. Gupta is currently visiting Dubai to receive the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Award for Humanitarian Work in Medical Sciences. The award has been instituted by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance. The award acknowledges Dr. Gupta’s exceptional contribution to the development of reconstructive plastic surgery and microsurgery.
Dr. Gupta is actively urging the Indian government for stronger legislation against acid attacks and for adequate compensation for the victims. In view of his humanitarian efforts, the President of India, H.E. Mrs Pratibha Patil conferred him with the Padmashri, one of the highest civilian awards conferred.
Dr. Adnan Kaddaha, Chairman of Cedars Jebel Ali International Hospital, felicitated Dr. Gupta today for all his initiatives towards the underprivileged and destitute. During the event, Dr. Gupta gave the audience an insight about his pioneering work, especially for acid burns victims, and how his organization, Reconstructive Surgery Foundation, continues to support their rehabilitation.
In his speech, Dr. Gupta thanked the UAE government for the honour and said that such recognitions further encouraged him and his colleagues to do more for the community.
“As we spread more awareness about our initiatives in some of the remote villages of the world, we hope to educate the society on how acid attacks can lead to permanent disfigurement and even death,” he added. “Such attacks are punishable but we are pushing for more severe sentences.”
Dr Gupta’s exemplary voluntary services of complex and life-saving reconstructive microsurgeries can also be testified by victims affected by riots, bomb blasts and animal attacks. At his Mumbai facility, he continues to treat victims from around the world for free.
