Regent Street unveils a spectacular display of flags in preparation for ‘NFL on Regent Street’ a traffic-free event on Saturday 28 September
Regent Street, London W1 revealed a spectacular display of flags in preparation for NFL.
Regent Street traffic free event on Saturday 28 September, ahead of the NFL’s forthcoming International Series in London and the game between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers at Wembley on Sunday 29 September.
The flags will be on display until the end of October, from Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus, featuring the Union flag alongside the American national flag.
The Block Party on Regent Street on Saturday 28 September will run from 12 noon until 6pm when shoppers will experience the buzz and traditional entertainment of American Football including cheerleaders, team areas, drumlines, NFL sporting challenges, live music, DJ's and American inspired food. Players from the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers will be taking time out from their preparations for the following day’s showdown at Wembley Stadium to have fun with their fans on Regent Street.
There will be performances by the well-known Minnesota Viking Cheerleaders as well as the Viking’s ‘Skol’ drumline on Regent Street’s mini NFL pitch. NFL fans can also take part in speed, accuracy and kicking challenges. Children can enjoy face painting and photo opportunities with NFL helmets and the NFL shield as well as inflatable challenges and obstacle courses. Activity will stretch from Nike Town at Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus.
Alistair Kirkwood, Managing Director of NFLUK, said: “We are really looking forward to giving visitors to Regent Street the opportunity to sample the excitement and razzmatazz of the NFL. The range of activities planned will offer something for everyone; whether a die-hard NFL fan or those who are simply looking for a fun day out or are curious to find out a little bit more about the sport.”
Visitors can also just come and shop; retailers and restaurants will be offering discounts, gifts with purchase, special promotions and competitions to celebrate the occasion. Shoppers can enjoy the American brands located on the street such as Anthropologie, Gap, Banana Republic, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers and many more.
Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association, said: “The Crown Estate’s recent investment in Regent Street has made it a must visit shopping and dining destination and NFL on Regent Street is a great reason for new visitors to come who possibly have no idea how the area has been transformed into the best shopping street in the West End.”
NFL on Regent Street will take place from 12 noon – 6pm on Saturday 28 September. Regent Street will be traffic-free from 4am– midnight.
Notes to editors:
Following the success of Summer Streets, when Regent Street was traffic free for four consecutive Sundays in July, this exciting event will mark a new date in the calendar where shoppers will be able to enjoy a street free of traffic to make the most of their shopping day. Other traffic free dates in the calendar include: Saturday 2 November, for the annual Regent Street Motor Show and Saturday 9 November, when the iconic Regent Street Christmas Lights will be switched on.
The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional sport in the United States, with more people naming American Football as their favourite sport than all the other professional sports combined. The climax of the NFL season, the Super Bowl, accounts for the top ten most-watched television shows in US history, with more than 160 million tuning in every year.
The NFL has responded to the great interest among UK fans by deciding to stage two games at Wembley this autumn. On Sunday 29 September the Minnesota Vikings will host the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won a record six Super Bowls, and on Sunday October 27 the Jacksonville Jaguars will be at home to the San Francisco 49ers.
Since 2007, the NFL has played one competitive, regular-season game every year at Wembley Stadium, with sell-out crowds of around 83,000. The action on-field is supported by a range of activity around London during the week of the game - including public appearances by NFL players and cheerleaders, community events and an NFL Fan Rally, which attracts more than 40,000 people the day before the game.
