STARWOOD HOTELS & RESORTS KUALA LUMPUR JOIN HANDS TO CELEBRATE CHILDREN AROUND THE WORLD
Associates of Four Starwood Hotels in KL walk for a good cause, in aid of the 2014 UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge
MALAYSIA – June 2014 – This year marks the 18th year of the collaboration between UNICEF and Starwood Hotels and Resorts in protecting and promoting children’s rights. The UNICEF Check Out for Children initiative has been channeled by Starwood Hotels & Resorts by giving every guest a Check Out for Children key card with their key wallet upon arrival. At the end of their stay, a voluntary 1 USD charge is added to the guest bill. The donation is not compulsory and is totally up to the guest’s agreement.
Ever since 2003, Starwood associates in the Asia- Pacific region have been supporting the UNICEF programs through the UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge, which is an associated fundraising effort between participating Starwood Hotels that is held annually. This year with the theme “Celebrate for Children”, all Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Kuala Lumpur, (namely Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur and The Westin Kuala Lumpur) will join forces to go the extra mile to help raise funds through a fun family walk event, which will be represented by associates from each hotel.
At least 50 associates will represent each Starwood Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and will walk for 5 kilometres at the Perdana Botanical Garden, (Lake Gardens) Kuala Lumpur on 22 June 2014 from 7.00am to 10.30am. Situated in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, the Lake Gardens is the green lung of the city and Kuala Lumpur’s fist large-scale recreational park that gives the visitors an ambience of being in a tropical rainforest, despite being in the middle of a bustling metropolis. Just the perfect place to gather all Starwood Kuala Lumpur associates for a fun and easy breezy walk.
“The eighteen year partnership between UNICEF and Starwood was established as a commitment to children’s rights. It is essential that every child has access to education, healthcare and nutritional food. With millions of funds raised since 2003, we continue to play a pivotal role to provide and transform lives in developing countries” said Harvey Thompson, General Manager of Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur.
Each associate who is interested in taking part in this charity walk can contribute by paying a registration fee of minimum RM40. The fee includes a t-shirt and two bottles of water – distributed in the hotel’s brand bags.
“We're proud to be part of this important initiative!” said Stephan Sieberg, General Manager of Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. “Besides the walkathon, the associates can look forward to fun-filled activities such as a banner design competition, brand engagement through mini concerts, interactive board games and booth displays that will showcase brand elements by each of the Starwood KL hotels.”
On that day, each Starwood KL hotel will be showcasing its own brand elements at individual booths with engaging activities for all associates. The youngest family member in Starwood Kuala Lumpur, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral will be showcasing their Live@Alofthotels element, enabling participants to connect with like-minded individuals in a fun –loving music space created by Aloft Hotels.
For those who like mind-challenging games, do head to the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur’s booth and participate in the Sheraton Brand board game. A host of interesting questions related to the Sheraton Brand programs will be asked to test your knowledge.
Meanwhile, Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur and The Westin Kuala Lumpur will be showcasing more health and lifestyle brand elements. Participants who stop by at the Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur’s booth will get a chance to taste the hotel’s Eye Opener drink, a combination of the most intriguing local flavors, made from the freshest and delicious fruits.
On the other hand, The Westin Kuala Lumpur will bring over the Westin Heavenly® Bed for the associates to have a first-hand experience of the famous white bed. The Westin Heavenly® Bed bedding consists of 250- thread count sheets, down duvets, plush pillows and custom pillow-top mattresses.
Food and drinks will also be available for sale at each booth for the purpose of raising more funds. Every Ringgit that will be raised from the sale and all of the proceeds on the day of the event will go towards interventions such as building and improving schools, training teachers, supplying school equipment and campaigning to ensure children stay in school.
To add more cheer to the event, all associates are encouraged to participate in a banner design competition prior to the event date. This competition allows associates to express their inner creativity in interpreting this year’s theme “Celebrate for Children” on an A3 poster using various mediums such as paint, pencil or charcoal! The winning design will be printed on a banner and displayed during the walkathon event. Plus, the lucky winner will also win a buffet dinner for 4 persons at any of the Starwood Hotels in Kuala Lumpur.
“The commitment of our associates in raising funds for UNICEF means a lot to us because every donation will make a difference to the lives of the vulnerable children around the world by helping them to build a brighter future.” said Hratch Khatchanian, General Manager of The Westin Kuala Lumpur.
In the true spirit of giving back, Starwood welcomes opportunities to contribute to the communities and the alliance in which the partnership with UNICEF was founded. Spearheaded by the Human Resource departments of all four Starwood Hotels in KL, this walkathon is an initiative not only aimed at raising funds to provide preschool education to the most disadvantaged children in rural communities, but also to create a great opportunity for hotel associates to strengthen their bond amongst themselves and their family members.
Paolo Campillo, General Manager of Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral said, ““Through this meaningful initiative from Starwood Hotels and Resorts and UNICEF, we not only hope to give back to the society but also hope to build a stronger relationship among all hotels’ associates and their family members in a healthy and positive way.”
In addition to that, the hotels will be working closely with renowned universities and colleges such as Taylor’s University College, KDU, Segi College and Sunway College to gain support for the charity event.
The participating Starwood Hotels and Resorts in Kuala Lumpur are all set to support this good cause by raising funds through various fun activities on the event day itself. With great support from the associates of each hotel, Starwood Hotels & Resorts looks forward to contributing all funds raised through this initiative towards saving children across the globe by giving them the head start they deserve in life.
