Taj supports British aviator on historic Great Britain to Australia flight
November 13 2015, Dubai, UAE: Tracey Curtis-Taylor is recreating history on an epic flight from Great Britain to Australia, where she is being supported along the way by global hospitality partner Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces.Tracey, who is retracing Amy Johnson’s pioneering flight from Great Britain to Australia which propelled her into the history books in 1930, is flying 13,000 miles across 23 countries in her 1942 Boeing Stearman open-cockpit biplane.
Eighty-five years on, Tracey is recreating Amy Johnson’s route where there are some striking similarities to the original flight path but also notable differences. When Johnson took off from Great Britain on her way to be the first woman to fly the route to Australia, she was able to draw an as-the-crow-flies line. On her route, Tracey is adding in a few extra stopovers to take in the experiences on offer in the UAE and Oman before heading to India. She hopes to recreate the essence of Johnson’s era of flying, with an open cockpit, stick and rudder flying with basic period instruments and a short range between landing points.
On her journey, Taj offers her a relaxing oasis on her stopover in Dubai at Taj Dubai, followed by The Gateway Hotel Ummed in Ahmedabad, The Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi and finally at Taj Bengal when she lands in Kolkata on 29 November 2015.
Tracey is experiencing the legendary Taj hospitality at Taj Dubai. Located in the heart of the city, Taj Dubai oversees the prestigious Downtown Dubai and Burj Khalifa districts and offers uninterrupted views of the iconic Burj Khalifa from more than half of the 296 guestrooms and suites.Taj Dubai features an array of culinary delights ranging from Peruvian to Indian fare, as well as the signature Jiva Spa featuring relaxing treatments that are carefully drawn from the rich wellness heritage of India.
Tracey said that she has been looking forward to experiencing the warmth of Indian hospitality after the very physical undertaking of flying five-hour days exposed to the elements in an open cockpit.
“I am delighted and grateful that Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is supporting my flight from Great Britain to Australia, which means a lot to me. I have received an extremely warm welcome at Taj Dubai which I was particularly excited to see!”
Jason Harding, Area Director and General Manager, Taj Dubai, said “It is our pleasure to have Tracey stay with us at Taj Dubai, offering her a taste of warm Indian hospitality in the heart of this glorious modern city”.
