The Box Appeal Annual Charity Drive Sees Record Donations
Over 13,000 boxes donated to aid the needy in UAE, Bahrain and Egypt
Dubai, Middle East; The Box Appeal, the charity campaign that aims to help those most in need by filling boxes with essential everyday items, returned for its fifth consecutive year in the Middle East, running for the duration of September and October 2012. With participation from the UAE, Bahrain and Cairo, the total number of boxes donated was over 13,000 - a significant increase from 2011, and a sign of the generosity and compassion from individuals and groups across the region.
This year’s initiative saw 11 Radisson Blu and Park Inn Hotels across the UAE, Bahrain and Cairo take part in the annual charity drive, with particularly strong partnerships forming with local schools and communities, as well as regional media corporations and partners. School children across the UAE participated in a friendly competition to collect the highest number of boxes, launched with great support and in collaboration with the Gulf News Broadcasting team, in particular the Radio 1 channel and its breakfast show presenters, who visited a number of schools taking part. The Gulf News Broadcasting team also generously pledged 250,000 AED worth of free publicity, which helped boost the awareness of the work of The Box Appeal.
The popularity of the 2012 campaign also saw an outstanding demand for the provided donation boxes, with organisers commissioning a second batch of 3,000 boxes that were distributed to Radisson Blu and Park Inn hotels for the public to access. In addition, the participation of hotels in Bahrain and Cairo ensured knowledge of the campaign grew in those regions, with many local connections offering invaluable backing through bulk donations.

The Box Appeal was initially founded by Radisson Blu Hotel Dubai, Media City, the first campaign was such a success that in the following years Radisson Blu and Park Inn Hotels in Abu Dhabi Yas Island decided to also join, and in 2011 the appeal spread across the Middle East, with Radisson Blu and Park Inn hotels in Oman, Egypt and Bahrain joining the cause. Since its launch in 2008, over 40,000 boxes have been donated, the equivalent of 4 million AED.
The Box Appeal asked the public to give back to those who need it most, by filling a small box with a list of everyday items, such as toothpaste, t-shirt, a cap and shaving cream. To take part, people collected a branded box from any Radisson Blu or Park Inn Hotel in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah or Sharjah to fill with the list of predetermined items and return to the hotel.
