Info on the puppetry
The Joe Louis Puppet Theatre was founded in 1999 by legendary Thai performer Sakorn Yangkhiawsod, also known by his English nickname of Joe Louis. Puppets have long been a celebrated art in Thailand however the popularity dwindled with the advance of modern technology. In a bid to save the art Master Yangkhiawsod perfected the puppet movements to make them appear more lifelike and trained his nine children in the techniques of puppetry. He showcased his first classic small puppet performance in 1985 and with this the revival of the art began. By 1996 Master Yangkhiawsod had been honored as a national artist in the performing art of small puppets, three years later he and his children opened the Joe Louis Theatre. Today, members of the theatre have won several awards and are recognized in Thailand and internationally due to their shows depicting traditional poetic Thai tales.
