WESTIN PEACHTREE PLAZA REPLACES CENTRAL PLANT
Expanding on Commitment to Conservation and Sustainable Operations
ATLANTA (November 12, 2010) – Expanding on Starwood's company-wide commitment to conservation and sustainable operations, The Westin Peachtree Plaza will replace its 30-year-old central plant, including new energy efficient chillers, boilers, heating, air conditioning and hot and water pumps on the 11th floor. The project, slated to be completed in just over a year, will have little to no impact on hotel operations.
On the heels of the replacement of all new fully-insulated windows, the hotel is taking the next step toward going green with this $13 million environmental upgrade of the heating and cooling system.
“We are proud to be on the leading edge of Starwood’s sustainability efforts,” explains General Manager Ed Walls. “Although we are making major improvements behind the scenes, guests at The Westin Peachtree Plaza will not be affected.”
Replacing the current steam induced gas absorption of boilers and chillers – some the size of train cars and in place since the 1970s –could save the hotel up to 30 percent in energy costs, when combined with savings from the newly installed windows. Once complete, the upgraded central plant will be significantly more powerful and energy efficient, making guest rooms more comfortable.
Starwood plans to significantly reduce energy and water consumption at every one of its 1,000 hotels within the decade. It is targeting a 30 percent reduction in energy use per available room by 2020.
