Young Chef of Wyndham Garden Ajman Corniche is a Gold Award Winner and ICCA’s Scholar
Harshani Sandamali Desapriya wins the Young Chef of the Year plus a US$ 10,000 worth of scholarship from ICCA
Dubai, UAE – Hard work and determination to succeed pays off as Harshani Sandamali Desapriya, Commis Chef of Wyndham Garden Ajman Corniche was hailed as the Gold Award winner for Hospitality Excellence – Young Chef of the Year from the recently concluded 4th Middle East Hospitality Excellence Awards. She also received a gift from ICCA Dubai – Professional Program (Diploma in Hospitality – Commercial Cookery) valued at US$ 10,000. The award was presented by Sunjeh Raja, CEO of ICCA Dubai and Vandana Bhatt, Managing Director of Hozpitality Group.
From numerous nominations, Harshani’s final contenders were from Jumeirah Beach Hotel, First Central Suites, Hilton Dubai The Walk, Hyatt Regency and Galleria, The Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel and Suresh Pandey, DCDP of Roda Al Murooj who took home the Silver Award.
The scholarship entitles Harshani to an exciting learning experience in ICCA Dubai’s Professional Diploma Program that is the heart of the ever thriving and an ever-expanding hospitality and tourism industry. The said accredited Diploma in Cookery / Patisserie, especially trains and enables one to effectively deliver and excel in the hospitality industry.
The humble Harshani started her career in Sri Lanka, her home country. She started as a Kitchen Helper in 2010. She decided to come to Dubai in 2013 and landed a job as kitchen steward in Dubai Hospital. She never knew that joining Ramada Hotel and Suites Ajman in 2015 will elevate her career path. She started as a Housekeeping Attendant. After a year, her passion for cooking tends her to work two jobs in a day. She worked in housekeeping department and then she will attend for her cross-training in pastry kitchen on her spare time. She potentially shows determination and interest to learn more on her chosen craft. In 2017, she was transferred to the Kitchen Department as Commis 3.
After demonstrating a remarkable skill in culinary, she joined the opening team for Wyndham Garden Ajman Corniche. Harshani never stop in trying to learn new dishes every day. Her colleague appreciates her being active and very dependable. She is very creative – could nicely decorate new cake and cookies. Harshani took her part in maintaining the all-day dining restaurant, arranging the ala cart order and making sure the kitchen stores are always clean, following the procedure of HACCP system and basic food hygiene. She’s always there to support the team during banquet functions.
