10 Years of Excellence in Sustainability: Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights Secures Green Globe Platinum Certification
Third hotel in UAE to achieve this prestigious milestone

Dubai, UAE – Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights Hotel Suites and Apartments has reaffirmed its position as a regional leader in sustainable hospitality, marking a milestone year of impactful environmental, technological, and community-focused achievements. In line with UAE’s NetZero 2050 vision, the hotel continues to drive change through measurable action and award-winning performance.
In a significant accomplishment, the hotel was awarded the prestigious Platinum Certification by Green Globe, recognizing over ten consecutive years of verified sustainable operations and long-term commitment to environmental responsibility. This elite status places Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights among a select group of hotels globally recognized for achieving the highest level of compliance with international sustainability standards, making us the third hotel in UAE to receive this prestigious Platinum certification of Green Globe.
A special awarding ceremony was held on 27 May 2025, where Muna Al Nahdi (Director of Sustainability and Consultancy, Farnek) and Taleed Al Khatib (Manager – Sustainability Section, DTCM) honored the hotel for a decade of sustainability leadership.
The property also earned the Silver Stamp from Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) in 2024, awarded after meeting 19 rigorous sustainability criteria outlined by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism. These honors reinforce the hotel’s ongoing contribution to the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and national sustainability goals.
Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights also utilizes Gaïa², Accor’s digital sustainability reporting platform, to monitor key metrics related to energy use, water conservation, waste management, and carbon footprint—ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
The hotel’s transition to a paperless environment through platforms such as Redberry, MessageBox, and Circularo led to the elimination of 1,978 kg of paper waste, equivalent to preventing over 3.1 million kg of CO₂ emissions in 2024 alone.
Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights has made strong strides in recycling, partnering with the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to collect and repurpose materials such as plastic, glass, paper, and cooking oil. Notable results include the collection of 6,356 kg of glass, earning 2nd runner-up in EEG’s Glass Collection Campaign, and 239 kg of cans as part of the 28th Annual Can Collection Drive, contributing to over 33.5 million kg of CO₂ emissions avoided.
As part of its green mobility efforts, the hotel installed electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, helping reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 9,600 kg annually while offering guests a convenient and eco-friendly amenity.
As part of its carbon reduction strategy, Mercure offset 34 tonnes of CO₂ from business travel by supporting a renewable wind energy project with Future Hero Energies and Farnek.
Beyond environmental achievements, the hotel strengthened its corporate social responsibility efforts through active partnerships with the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, the UAE Food Bank, and EEG. Programs included meal distributions to labor communities, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, and PINKtober breast cancer awareness initiatives in collaboration with Al Jalila Foundation. The hotel also celebrated World Gratitude Day with heartfelt guest and staff recognition activities.
Recognitions for the hotel’s operational excellence included an 'A' Gold Grade certification from the Dubai Municipality’s Food Safety Department, and dual accolades at the World Luxury Awards: “Luxury Business Hotel – UAE” and “All-Day Buffet Dining – Middle East” for its flagship venue, Day & Night Restaurant. The restaurant also earned a place among the Top 10 finalists in the Dubai Food Elite Program, reflecting its commitment to safety, nutrition, sustainability, and social impact.
“These achievements reflect our deep-rooted commitment to responsible hospitality and our ongoing pursuit of positive impact—socially, environmentally, and economically,” said Levent Tasbas, General Manager. “Sustainability is more than a program; it’s embedded in our culture and operations.”
Mercure Dubai Barsha Heights continues to lead by example, demonstrating that meaningful environmental impact and exceptional guest experiences can go hand in hand in the modern hospitality industry.
