REGISTRATION CARD: A form completed and signed by the guest giving his name, address and other data at the time of his arrival

RESERVATION RACK: An alphabetical list of anticipated arrivals filed according to the date of arrival.

ROLL AWAY: A fold-able cot. Also known as Z-bed.

ROOM NIGHT: A definition used by the sales department for a room that is occupied for one night

ROOMING: Procedures involved in greeting a guest, assigning a room and escorting or directing the guest to his/her room.

ROOMING LIST: The list of names furnished by a group in advance of their arrival and used by the Hotel to make individual reservations and to preregister the group members.

ROOM/RATE CATEGORY: A classification used to segregate guestrooms. Normally a guestroom is Categorized by rate and then by room type.

ROOM RACK: A file listing all rooms available for sale and rooms occupied by guests, arranged by guestroom numbers.

ROOM REVENUE REPORT (RRR): Reports compiled by night auditor’s listing the revenue for each room, no. of occupants and checkout dates. This report is often used in making the morning housekeeper’s assignment.

ROOM STATUS: A code or description indicating the occupancy and readiness status of the room.

RUN OF THE HOUSE: The term used to indicate that an agreement has been made with a group to offer its members best available rooms in the Hotel at a specially quoted price.

Reservation HORIZON: The planning interval throughout which the Hotel will be willing to accept and confirm inquiries for available space. Normally a six-month frame.

RULE OF THUMB: A method by which business standard based upon extensive historical data and experiences are taken into consideration for developing a room rate.

REFERRAL GROUP: A group of independent hotels that have joined together for their common good. Hotels within this group refer their departing guest or those guests they cannot accommodate, to other properties in the referral group.

ROOM STATUS REPORT: A report that allows front desk to identify vacant and ready room status prepared as part of the night audit.

ROOM VARIANCE REPORT: A report listing any discrepancy between front desks and housekeeping status.

SCANTY BAGGAGE: A term used for those guests who on arrival in the Hotel bring little or no baggage at all.

SELL-UP / UP-SELL: To convince an arriving guest to take a more expensive room than he or she has reserved or planned to take.

SHARE: Room occupied by two people under two names and separate accounts.

SHOULDER PERIOD: A calendar period between a peak season and an off-season in which lower rates may be offered for promotional purposes.

SKIPPER: A guest who leaves the Hotel without making arrangements to settle his/her bills.
