In a time marked by economic uncertainty, policy shifts, and rapid technological innovation, the hospitality industry continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace. We had the opportunity to speak with Laura Lee Blake, President and CEO of AAHOA (Asian American Hotel Owners Association), to gain insight into how AAHOA’s nearly 20,000 members are navigating today’s most pressing challenges and seizing tomorrow’s opportunities.
On the Impact of Recent Tariffs on the Hospitality Industry
The recent implementation of significant import tariffs from Canada, Mexico, and China has raised concerns about cost volatility within hospitality operations. Blake emphasized the adaptive spirit of AAHOA members:
“Since the announcement of the new tariffs, AAHOA Members have demonstrated what they do best: adapt, analyze, and act,” she said. “While some hoteliers are monitoring potential increases in material costs, others see opportunities for long-term domestic growth. One thing is certain—resilience is in our DNA.”
Rather than react with alarm, many hotel owners are evaluating supply chains and identifying ways to optimize cost management. Blake pointed to AAHOA’s recent initiatives, including the Kalibri Labs partnership and a groundbreaking certification in ROI-focused operations, as part of a broader strategy to ensure members are prepared to drive profitability amid economic changes.
On Immigration Policy and the Hospitality Workforce
Immigration remains a critical topic for the hospitality sector, which depends heavily on a diverse and dedicated labor force. Blake acknowledged the growing tension around evolving immigration policies, particularly their effects on staffing and customer engagement.
“The hospitality industry is built on the strength of immigrant workers,” she said. “Our members are already seeing ripple effects, from decreased foot traffic to staffing challenges. AAHOA is committed to helping them navigate these issues with clarity and compassion.”
Through its collaboration with the American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC), AAHOA offers multilingual resources—available in 10 languages—to help hotel owners remain compliant while supporting their teams. Blake emphasized the need for hotel leaders to create inclusive environments, stating that “those who lead with integrity are not just responding to policy changes—they're building a more united and resilient industry.”
On the Integration of AI in Hospitality
From chatbots to predictive analytics, artificial intelligence is transforming how hotels operate and engage with guests. For AAHOA, the rise of AI represents a pivotal opportunity—not a threat.
“Artificial Intelligence is not just the future of hospitality—it is happening right now,” Blake said. “We launched our Tech Task Force to identify the best tools for hoteliers to run smarter, leaner businesses.”
She highlighted real-world applications—automated guest messaging, predictive maintenance, AI-powered revenue management—as proof that technology can enhance both guest experience and operational efficiency. Blake stressed that the greatest barrier isn’t the technology itself but the willingness to embrace it. “Change management and training are essential. But when embraced, AI enhances—not replaces—the human touch that defines our industry.”
On Policy, Advocacy, and Resilience
As hotel owners grapple with economic shifts, policy changes, and inflation, AAHOA is taking an assertive role in advocacy and resource development. Blake discussed key legislative priorities such as the LIONs Act and the Credit Card Competition Act, as well as efforts to maintain key tax deductions and improve access to capital through SBA lending reforms.
Beyond policy, AAHOA is actively creating tools to help members thrive in a competitive market. Initiatives like AAHOA Marketplace, a cost-saving supply platform developed with Avendra International, and AAHOA Lending, powered by Bridge, are just some of the ways the organization is helping its members protect margins and scale efficiently.
“Our role is to make sure hotel owners are informed, connected, and equipped to lead,” Blake explained. “That’s what AAHOA stands for.”
On Labor Shortages and Workforce Innovation
Labor shortages remain a top concern for hoteliers across the country. AAHOA is backing federal proposals like the Essential Workers for Economic Advancement Act (EWEA) to help address gaps in the hospitality labor force.
“This is a small business issue at its core,” Blake said. “Many of our members are family-run operators who are stepping in themselves to fill the staffing gaps.”
While increasing wages and offering incentives have become more common, technology is also playing a crucial role. Contactless check-ins, virtual agents, and automated housekeeping scheduling are just a few solutions that help hotels stay operational despite staffing constraints.
Looking Ahead: Growth Through Unity and Innovation
As the industry continues to shift, Blake believes that proactive adaptation, strategic partnerships, and unified advocacy will define the path forward. Under the leadership of Chairman Kamalesh (KP) Patel, AAHOA is focusing on eight strategic priorities, from enhancing profitability and member engagement to investing in next-gen leaders and advocating for meaningful legislative change.
“The future belongs to those who lead with vision,” Blake said. “Our members aren’t waiting to see what happens next—they’re taking action today.”
Through initiatives that blend advocacy, education, and innovation, AAHOA is setting the pace for a more sustainable, tech-forward, and inclusive hospitality industry. The message is clear: no matter the challenge, this community of hotel owners is ready to rise—and lead.
